Farewell from Istanbul

This is not about a park.
This is not about a park.

On our last days in Istanbul, we’re packing, trying to meet and say good-bye to as many as possible, we’re caught in the escalation of the Gezi Park Protest on Taksim Square.

Istanbul Gaz FestivalWhat started as a protest by only a few hundreds, to protect the trees of Gezi Park to be cut down for yet another shopping mall turned into a citywide expression of anger by the Turkish people.

It’s not about the park anymore – it has grown into a much bigger issue, that some happily call the beginning of a “Turkish Spring”. Because of the excessive use of tear gas and pepper spray some now speak of a “Turkish Gaz Festival”.
